May 8-9, 2014 Beaufort to Charleston

Trip from Beaufort to Charleston: We left the dock about 8:30 with a perfect light flood that helped pull the bow away from the dock. Threaded our way thru some boats at anchor in the channel and turned north at Judie's bridge. Beautiful clear and "Breezy" day. We passed the local Marine Corps Air Station - not much visible but certainly heard the planes take off - sounded like Luke Air base back home. Other than that, a few houses, some docks and lots of marsh.
One of a few houses we could actually see on this part of the trip.

Judie likes this patio at the end of a dock!

Every pier needs a sitting area at the end.

We travel 49 miles this day and anchored in Church Creek along with a few other boats. Lots of Crab Pots and light breeze. We had time after dinner and finished a 500 piece jigsaw puzzle we had been working on for the last 2-3 years. We awoke early the next day in order to get to Charleston at slack tide so we would have no current when docking. The 17 miles went quickly with the assist of the ebb tide and we were actually early. Did a few laps in front of Charleston before entering the marina. The last mile or so of the trip was thru the "Elliott Cut". You guessed it - man made, narrow, and strong current. The first 1/4 mile was about 100' wide with rocks on both sides!Again, we kept the boat in the center, followed the recommended path on the chart, and did just fine. We are learning to trust the charts and guidebooks, follow their advice and be successful! Docking went well. We had a slip on the inside row and needed to do a 180 degree turn as we entered our slip. Captain is getting better all the time - deckhand was first class.
