We left Brunswick just before 8:00 along with the other Monk 36 - "Slip Away", with Jim and June Warren aboard. It was a cold and gray morning with a few showers and then cleared in the afternoon. We traveled 65 miles the first day - a long day; arriving in Walburg Creek about 5:00 for what is our firs overnight anchorage of the trip. We anchored a comfortable distance away from other boats and were a little nervous after the tide changed directions. But all was well, and we did sleep in our clothes in case we needed to react quickly - a wasted strategy!

The next morning we were up and away - again about 8:00. Our destination was a channel called "Hell Gate", a narrow, shallow, swift current passage connecting two rivers. It was a little over-rated as we had no problems - the anxiety getting there was worse. Slip Away left us at "Isle of Hope Marina" - the first stop for Savannah. It looked crowded, busy, and alive with music and boat noises - we are glad that we continued on another 7 miles (36 for the day) to "Thunderbolt Marina". It is quiet, clean, neat and very friendly place. The facility is split into two sections. One is a repair and maintenance facility for LARGE boats and the other is the marina for about 45 boats - mostly transit folks like ourselves. They even deliver Krispy Kreme donuts to you every morning about 6:45; just in time for coffee! Ger had his firat "Shrimp and Grits" for dinner at "Tubby's Tank House".
